Our time in Val di Funes was about enjoying the landscape, taking photographs and discovering the peaceful side of the Italian Dolomites. From the views around Santa Maddalena to the mountains rising behind the valley, it is a place that stays with you long after you leave.
Our First Impressions of Val di Funes
The first thing that caught our attention in Val di Funes was how peaceful everything felt. Green meadows stretched across the valley, traditional houses were scattered along the hillsides, and the dramatic Dolomites rose in the distance.
It was one of those places where we didn’t feel the need to rush. We simply wanted to stop, take in the views, photograph the landscape and enjoy being surrounded by nature.
The contrast between the quiet valley and the sharp mountain peaks made Val di Funes feel completely different from many other places we had visited.
Arriving in Val di Funes
As we made our way into Val di Funes, the scenery became more impressive with every turn. The roads passed through small villages and open countryside, while the Dolomites slowly began to dominate the view ahead.
What we loved most was the feeling of entering somewhere calm and untouched. There was no need to rush from one attraction to another. Even the drive itself felt like part of the experience.
Once we arrived, we took our time exploring the valley, stopping whenever a view caught our attention and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere that makes Val di Funes so memorable.
Santa Maddalena and the Views We Came For
Santa Maddalena was one of the places we were most excited to see in Val di Funes. The village is surrounded by green fields and traditional houses, with the dramatic Odle peaks rising behind it.
This is the view that makes the valley so recognisable, but seeing it in person feels very different from seeing it in photographs. The scale of the mountains, the quiet surroundings and the open landscape make the whole scene feel much more impressive.
We spent time walking around, looking for different viewpoints and taking photographs from several angles. Instead of focusing only on the classic postcard view, we enjoyed exploring the area and finding our own perspective of the valley.
St. John in Ranui
Another place we really wanted to see in Val di Funes was the small Church of St. John in Ranui. Surrounded by open meadows and backed by the Odle mountains, it is one of the most striking scenes in the valley.
What makes this place special is the contrast between the tiny church and the huge mountain landscape behind it. From a distance, the church almost feels like a small detail in a much bigger picture.
We took some time to enjoy the view, take photographs and simply appreciate how peaceful the setting felt. It is an easy place to remember because the whole scene looks almost perfectly arranged by nature.
Taking Our Time in the Valley
One of the things we enjoyed most about the valley was simply taking our time. We didn’t feel the need to follow a strict plan or rush between different places.
We stopped when something caught our attention, walked through quieter areas, took photographs and spent time enjoying the mountain views.
That slower pace made the experience feel more personal. Val di Funes is the kind of place where the landscape itself is enough, and some of the best moments came from doing very little and just enjoying where we were.
Photography in Val di Funes
This is one of those places where it is difficult to put the camera away. Almost every direction offers a different combination of mountains, meadows, traditional houses and quiet roads.
We especially enjoyed photographing the contrast between the soft green landscape and the dramatic Odle peaks in the background. The light changed throughout the day, which made the same places look completely different from one moment to the next.
Some of our favourite photos came from simply walking around the valley and stopping whenever a view felt right. We were not trying to recreate the exact images we had seen before we wanted to capture Val di Funes in our own way and remember how the valley felt while we were there.
Is Val di Funes Worth Visiting?
For us, Val di Funes was absolutely worth visiting.
It is not a place you visit because there are dozens of attractions to tick off a list. What makes it special is the atmosphere, the scenery and the feeling of being surrounded by nature.
The peaceful villages, open meadows and dramatic Dolomites create a landscape that feels both simple and unforgettable.
If you enjoy photography, mountain views, quiet places and slower travel, Val di Funes is definitely a destination worth adding to your trip through the Dolomites.
A Place We Won’t Forget
This valley is one of those places that stays with you because of how simple and peaceful the experience feels.
For us, it was not about rushing from one attraction to another. It was about enjoying the scenery, taking photographs, slowing down and spending time in a place that feels completely surrounded by nature.
The Dolomites are full of incredible landscapes, but Val di Funes has a character of its own. If we return one day, we would happily spend even more time exploring the valley and discovering the quieter corners we may have missed.
Sometimes the best travel memories come from the places where you do the least and simply enjoy being there.
